You can be highly functional and still be exhausted
Performance is not the same as capacity. Plenty of people are running a deficit that never shows up on the outside.
There is a particular kind of client who is hard to help, because nothing about them looks like it needs help. The business is good. The training is consistent. The calendar is full and the results are real.
And they are running on a reserve that has not been repaid in four years.
High function is a poor diagnostic. It tells you what someone can produce, not what it is costing them to produce it. People compensate — with caffeine, with adrenaline, with the genuine pleasure of being good at something — and compensation works right up until it doesn’t.
What a deficit actually looks like
- Sleep that is technically adequate and never restorative.
- A first real hunger signal at 2pm.
- Excellent decisions at work and no decisions at all about dinner.
- Recovery that used to take a day and now takes four.
- A weekend spent recovering from the week rather than doing anything with it.
None of these is pathology. Every one of them is information.
The work is not to slow down. Most people in this position do not want to slow down and should not be told to. The work is to raise the floor — to make the baseline strong enough that ambition stops being subsidized by depletion.
